The most bookmarked holiday homes on Stayz show Australian holiday-makers prioritise a pool or a five-minute walk to the beach.

Many people choose larger homes that cost less than $100 per person per night when travelling as a family or group.

Stayz said the peak holiday rental period over summer is December 29 to January 11.

"Consider travelling later in January for more availability," they said.

According to fellow holiday rental website Wotif, the most popular destinations this summer (excluding capital cities) are all beachside. The top 10 are:

  1. Gold Coast, QLD
  2. Sunshine Coast, QLD
  3. Port Stephens, NSW
  4. Cairns, QLD
  5. Central Coast, NSW
  6. Coffs Harbour, NSW
  7. Byron Bay, NSW
  8. Newcastle, NSW
  9. The Whitsundays, QLD
  10. Tweed Heads, NSW

To find a holiday home that's right for you, use search filters to determine whether you want a pool, a pet-friendly house, or nearby activities like fishing.

If you stay longer, you can sometimes score a discount on some websites, for example, 10 per cent off your stay for a week or longer.

Here are the five most saved holiday homes on Stayz this summer.

My all-time favourite destination is ... Cornwall. From the giant seagulls to the blustery beaches, Cornish pasties and fishing villages, it stirs something romantic and seafaring in me.

Next on my bucket list is … Mongolia. I want to go somewhere really unique that feels totally foreign and challenges my way of life.

My top travel tip is … Don’t plan too much. Walk the streets and let it happen. And make sure you check out what’s within a few blocks of your hotel - sometimes the best local food is found that way.
