GeoScience Australia, the federal government agency that monitors earthquakes, reported a 3.7 magnitude earthquake striking the Albury, Wodonga and Holbrook region on April 4 at 12.30pm.
This is the largest earthquake to hit the region since 1998 when a 3.8 magnitude earthquake struck.
Senior seismologist Jonathan Bathgate told ACM they have had 15 reports from the Aubury Wodonga region about the earthquake.
No damage has been reported.
"At this type of magnitude I wouldn't expect any significant damage," he said.
"Earthquakes of this size would have limited amount of shaking, people experience a short sharp jolt," he said.
"They often hear it more than they feel it."
The area has a history of small earthquakes, Mr Bathgate said.
"Over the last 20 years 29 earthquakes have occurred within 100km of the epicentre of this earthquake," he said.
