Petrol prices will continue to fall heading into the Easter long weekend amid the ongoing fallout from the Trump administration's trade war.

NRMA spokesperson Peter Khoury told ACM regional Australia's prices won't drop as significantly as those in capital cities but were trending downwards.

"The falls won't be as dramatic as capital cities that have price cycles with the exception of larger areas such as Newcastle, which are closer to big cities, but they will fall nonetheless," he said.

The main indicator of petrol prices, global oil, had been falling for at least two weeks, Mr Khoury said.

Australia's regional benchmark for oil, Tapis, has been in freefall since the Trump administration launched its global tariff war in the first week of April.

The cost of oil has dropped US$10 a barrel in the past week alone.

The other indicator, the Terminal Gate Price for regular unleaded, has dropped eight cents to 157.6 cents per litre.

Mr Khoury said the prices should continue to decline with OPEC's expected supply increase on the global market in May.

But Mr Khoury warned things could change rapidly.

"Nobody could have predicted the extreme volatility of trading conditions brought about by the United States' global trade war and things continue to change almost by the hour," he said.

"Making the most of these lower prices is critical for families and we are urging Australians taking a road trip these holidays to get on the my NRMA App before they fill up."

According to the Australian Institute of Petroleum (AIP) the national average for unleaded petrol was 179.7 cents per litre in the week up until April 13.

NSW/ACT had the lowest unleaded petrol on average at 175.0 cents per litre followed by Western Australia (176.8 cents per litre) and South Australia (177.2 cents per litre).

Canberra had an average of 178.9 cents per litre for the week up until April 13, a fall of 3.6 cents from the previous week.
