Organiser Pat Drew put the call out for additional help several weeks ago, but sadly only half a dozen volunteers could be found.
A minimum of 15 volunteers are needed on the day to ensure a safe and successful race.
“We want to try and run a good event, have it run safely and not have people too stressed about what they’ve got to do,” Mr Drew said.
“We thought it’s probably better if we haven’t quite got the numbers to cancel the event for now and see what happens this year.”
The annual event has been running in conjunction with Coota Beach Volleyball for over a decade, often drawing over 150 competitors.
Mr Drew believes the event may be a victim of the success of the volleyball, rather than a lack of interest in a local triathlon.
“It was well supported and particularly the kids enjoyed it, it was a good morning,” he said.
“I think it’s just a fact that everyone’s tied up with the volleyball, it’s popular and it’s good for the community, so that’s great.”
Mr Drew is disappointed but determined to see the event return to Cootamundra either later this year or early in 2017.
“We might be able to do something away from the volleyball weekend, which might suit everyone else better,” he said.
Cootamundra is part of the Riverina Tri Series, which includes events in Wagga, Temora, Ganmain and Narrandera.
Mr Drew said there is still “plenty of races” to compete in for those that are keen, and the plan is to bring back the local race sooner rather than later.
