MAY we take a moment to extend happy birthday wishes to Madi Byrne who turned 18 on Monday, Wayne Berkrey who marked his birthday watching his beloved Bulldogs on Sunday, Tracey Connell who celebrated her birthday on Monday and a couple of former Herald staff members, Kate Benson who celebrated a birthday last Saturday and Helen Johnson, who was no doubt spoiled for her birthday yesterday.
Red Cross celebrations
THIS year marks 100 years of Red Cross in Australia and the Cootamundra branch of Red Cross is taking the opportunity to celebrate.
Red Cross will host a street stall outside their Parker Street shop (weather permitting) on Wednesday’ August 13 between 10am and 4pm - that is if their delicious goodies don’t sell out earlier.
Red Cross is an institution in Cootamundra with their charity store well supported by customers.
Further help is needed though in the form of new volunteers. If you are interested in becoming part of the Red Cross simply contact a member.
If you can help with donations of goods or assistance to the street stall please contact shop coordinator Jean Dietsch.
Bike Festival tops available
YOU don’t have to be participating in the Coota Bike Festival later this year to purchase a jersey.
The jerseys, $50 each, are now available to order on the website www.cootabikefestival.com.au by going to the entry menu.
Interested people can also email info@cootabikefestival.com.au to arrange an order.
Orders close this Friday, August 1 so get in quick.
These jerseys are also a great way of promoting Coota for anyone out of town who is keen on bike riding. My dad proudly wears his from a former year’s event around Wollongong when he finds the time to cycle!
Plans underway for 1950/60 school reunion
PLANS are well underway for our upcoming ‘1959/60 We’re Turning 60 Reunion’ to be held on the October Long weekend.
It has been a huge task locating nearly 200 students who started school at Coota Public School in either 1959 or 1960 and completed school at Coota High in either 1970 or 1972 and anyone who came and went in between as well as teachers from that time.
A fun time is assured for those attending where they will be able to catch up with some old (should we say “familiar”) faces and go for a stroll down memory lane.
Activities include an informal get together on Friday, October 3 at the Central Hotel for those who arrive early, a walk through both Coota Public and Coota High on the Saturday morning, dinner at the White Ibis on Saturday night and lunch at the Cootamundra Country Club on the Sunday to round out the weekend.
Although every effort has been made to contact all of classmates from the era, a few have not been found.
Perhaps readers may know of the location of someone who may have been among those students or teachers.
The RSVP date for the weekend has been extended so people still have plenty of time to register.
So far there are some travelling from as far away as Queensland and South Australia and basically all points in between.
This will be the third reunion for the group who has a “We’re Turning 30 Reunion” and a “We’re Turning 40 Reunion.”
The group did not get around to the “We’re Turning 50 Reunion” for multiple reasons but this will probably be the last hurrah as most say they can’t really picture a “We’re turning 70 reunion” (but you never know!)
This occasion is really unique as apart from the vast majority of attendees turning 60, it also turns out that most started school in 1960 and completed school in 1970 - so if someone were to ask “Where were you in the 60’s?” the answer is very easy – “At school!’
Consequently we will be giving a nod to the 60s as well. Ah those were the days!
