A double link in the Cootamundra and Stockinbingal sporting communities was broken by the recent deaths of well-known sportsmen John Pendergast and Arnold Clarke.
John Pendergast was always described by his sporting associates as being a very loyal and reliable club member ... a never let you down man.
He played Merrin Cup cricket for Stockinbingal for some three decades and also lined up with in-town team Ex-Students for a couple of seasons in Sparre Cup.
Week after week he would line up for the Cootamundra rugby league games, mainly as an eighty-minute reserve grader, playing in the forwards.
John also played for his beloved Stockinbingal rugby league team when Billy Woods was the coach in the 1960s.
John Pendergast was never a sporting champion, but he was a champion bloke, a great trier and admired by all those who came in contact with him.
Arnold Clarke represented Cootamundra many times in inter-town basketball and won several premierships in the local competition.
He was also a very competent basketball referee back in the 1960s when Cootamundra had numerous teams in several grades.
A lover of the game, Arnold also did more than his share in basketball administration during that period.
Being a tall man, he also revelled the tough stuff as a ruckman in the local Australian rules football team … he returned to Cootamundra for the 50 years celebrations in 2010.
He was a valuable member of the team during the 1960s.
For the past 30 years, Arnold had been living at Capabar (Queensland)
To the older folk in Cootamundra he would have been remembered as a staff member of the local Post Office, and like John Pendergast, Arnold Clarke was also a champion bloke.

In another note ref Arnold’s passing after a long battle with cancer, it was mentioned that some of his final words were to pass on his thanks to the folk of “Wattle Town” for sharing their life with him.
If you wish to be in touch with the family of Arnold, his wife Eve’s address is: 20 Gerbera St., Alexander Hills. Qld. 4161
JUST A GLITCH
The Committee of The Arts Centre sent us this short note of apology for the patrons who were in attendance at the showing of that brilliant movie “Philomena” which took place last week -
“Apologies to the large audience who attended last Wednesday morning’s wonderful film “Philomena”. There were a few “glitches” with the DVD, but it did run through till the end and the volunteer projectionist was loathe to stop it as the story was so engrossing. Should an unfortunate incident like this happen again, and any member of the audience is dissatisfied ( not just if you didn’t like the movie !!!) please feel free to speak with the volunteer on the door, or Customer Service Officer at the front desk to be granted a complimentary ticket to the next movie.’
AND in mentioning the TOP movies one can now see in The Tin Shed Theatre at the Arts Centre TONIGHT “The Man From Cox’s River” is screening at 6.30pm.
Then next week “The Book Thief’ screens on Wednesday, August 20 at 10.30am and again at 7pm, then Sunday, August 23 at 5pm.
SPLENDID JAZZ NIGHT
The place to be tomorrow night is the Wattle Room of the Ex-Services Club where the sensational jazz band ‘Shiraz’ will be performing. There will be a Great Gatsby theme, a complimentary champagne will be served on arrival and finger food.
The cost is only $20, and do let the girls in reception know you are coming for catering purposes.
It sounds like a TOP night out.
OOPS
I was delighted to write on Wednesday’s Around Cootamundra page the story of the 60th Wedding Anniversary of local couple Keith and Kathleen Stewart.
They celebrated this wonderful milestone yesterday with a happy day and I do need to say to Keith and Kath OOPS - my CONGRATULATIONS should have addressed Keith and Kath not Keith and Shirley!!
