The Launceston City Council has released a statement:
Launceston Mayor Albert van Zetten and Launceston City Council General Manager Robert Dobrzynski are shocked and dismayed at the tragic death of Deputy Mayor Jeremy Ball.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with Karina and their two young children Griffin and Jasper," Mayor van Zetten said.
"Jeremy was a talented, passionate, creative and energetic man.
"He was a rare individual; someone of extreme integrity, a loyal Deputy, a gifted orator, someone wholly dedicated to realising Launceston's full potential.
"He fought passionately for the causes he believed in - he did it with humour, and with respect, and by putting in an immense amount of work for his community.
"This is a devastating day for our city."
Launceston City Council General Manager Robert Dobrzynski said support and counselling would be available to council staff in coming days.
"This news has left us shocked and numbed," Mr Dobrzynski said.
"Our hearts go out to Jeremy and his family, and also the many members of the wider community who interacted with Jeremy during the course of his work as an Alderman.
"Jeremy was a passionate member of several council committees, including the Heritage Advisory Committee and the Launceston Bike Committee, and he had an enormous interest in social justice matters.
"This is an utter tragedy."
Jeremy Ball was first elected to the Launceston City Council in 2007, and elected Deputy Mayor in 2011.
