Paradise calling

The pair scored an incredible 94 to top a final field of 76 golfers and win Cootamundra’s inaugural Father and Son 4Ball Stableford.

Their prize is entrance to the South Pacific Father and Son Tournament in Fiji this October, along with four nights accommodation and $1,000 toward their airfares.

Paul said the win was “pretty special” and he’s looking forward to a family getaway on Denarau Island.

“We’ve never had a prize like this in Cootamundra, it was a lot to play for,” he said.

Despite being organised in just six weeks the maiden competition proved a hit, with 100 golfers turning up on Saturday for the first round.

The massive prize drew visitors from around the region and as far afield as Canberra, Cooma, Narranderra and Wollongong.

Cootamundra Country Club president Garry Mason hailed the event a success and said he is certain it will continue to grow.

“Some great golf was played by the eventual trophy winners and the highlight on Saturday was local golfer Clarrie Power scoring a hole in one on the fifth,” Garry said.

“I’m sure this will feature in the Fair Dink column this week.”

Garry congratulated Paul and Lachlan on their great victory and said the whole club will be behind them in Fiji.

He and also thanked Chris Dawe for initiating the event and gaining sponsorship.

Local pro Graeme Cheshire shared Garry’s enthusiasm for the future of the competition.

“It was a very successful weekend for the club and really great to see that many golfers on the course over two days,” Graeme said.

“We’ve received great feedback from people who have said they will come back. Now it is on the NSW Golf calendar we will continue to build on it and hopefully see more competitors from places like Sydney.”

Graeme said the event was incredibly well supported by local teams, who made up about two-thirds of the competition, and the club will aim for more visitors to boost the numbers to at least 120 next year.
