The 20-year-old Victorian driver was lucky to escape the burning vehicle after his dash warning lights indicated a problem and he saw smoke under the bonnet.
He exited the vehicle before it was engulfed and also managed to salvage some of his belongings.
The man had been towing a mobile bar to a food and wine event in Newcastle, with the trailer also completely lost to the fire.
Traffic Management Control and police assisted at the scene with paramedics also called, however the unhurt driver was not taken to hospital.
Emergency services had the scene cleared up by about 8am.
