The loose change in the tin finds a new home with Cootamundra’s Can Assist.
On Thursday, Can Assist members Neil Murray and Clarrie Power came by the cafe to collect it so it can be used to help residents diagnosed with cancer.
Mr Murray and Mr Power said $2000 had been donated by the tin.
Since 2012 the cafe has been collecting the spare change.
Mr Murray said $1804.85 had been donated before they collected the full tin on Thursday and replaced it with an empty one.
“We don’t know how much is in there until we count it, it can be up to $300, sometimes is $200,” Mr Murray said.
“It’s something that’s very helpful to the charity,” he said.
Most of the money is in silver pieces, although there’s the rare occasion when someone leaves a note for the charity.
“Loose change can make a difference, every donation makes a difference, the most is used to support people in the old Cootamundra shire boundaries and we help people who ask for it,” Mr Murray said.
A number of shops have the donation tins and Mr Murray said they weren't delivered to a shop or business unless they asked for it.
Mr Murray said Popular Cafe owners Carmen Chau and Long Dang call when the till is full.
The tin found a home in the cafe after Clarrie Power stopped by when he was looking for a place to advertise his popular joke books.
“I asked to put an A4 ad in the window for my joke books,” Mr Power said.
“Then Carmen and Long said to me they had a change tin and they wanted it to go the charity I supported with the books,” he said.
“They were good enough to put a piece of paper in the window and then to give the money to Can Assist.”
Ms Chau said the loose change tin was a simple way to help out the community which supported the business.
“The customers in Cootamundra help us which is why we’re still open and we want to help them, so we support Can Assist,” Ms Chau said.
