The Newcastle Beer Wenches won the A-grade final against the Sandy Spikers.
It was the fifth attempt for the Newcastle team which has players who have been national and state representative volleyball players.
Glen Rigby from the Beer Wenches said the Sandy Spikers started the grand final strongly, putting points on the board immediately.
“There were a few nervous moments,” Rigby said.
However, the Newcastle team equalised with the Sandy Spikers back before running away to win by 14 points.
“Evan James was the standout, he stepped up and played extremely well in the front court,” he said.
“It was a real team effort to get to the final and to win.”
Rigby said the team were excited to win.
“I was that happy I nearly cried, I ran straight off the court and hugged the organisers,” he said.
“We can’t thank the organisers enough.”
Festival committee chairwoman Janine Ricketts said it was another successful event.
“Everyone was really positive and loved the atmosphere,” Ricketts said.
“There’s always the competitive groups but no matter win or loss, they’re still having fun.”
Another positive for the event was no major injuries or incidents.
Ricketts said the help from Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional Council in setting up the event helped take some of the pressure off the small committee.
“It will be even better next year when they have more of an idea of what needs to be done,” she said.
Ricketts said the committee also owed thanks to Eulonga Quarries for bringing in the sand, Fallon Excavations and Don Manwaring for spreading the sand, plus Pop’s Plumbing for installing bubblers and hoses and Steve Cross for his electrical work.
“And Col Trickett who has refereed the A grade grand final for at least 12 years,” she said.
The committee will hold a debrief meeting in the next few weeks.
