Lachie has been selected in the ACT Junior Rugby Union training squad for under 14s and will head to the nation’s capital for training on Sunday. ACT Junior Rugby feeds into the Canberra Brumbies junior sides.
A final squad for the under 14s is set to be selected after the team plays the Central West’s team in Cowra in April.
“It will narrow it down to a 23-man squad,” Lachie said.
That team will then play over the June long weekend at the state championships.
Lachie has been selected for representative duties Southern Inland Rugby Union’s (SIRU) under 12s and under 13s teams.
Last year he played in the SIRU team against the ACT team he’s now a part of.
“It’s an interesting bond at times but the forwards are pretty close and we get along well,” he said.
Lachie said he’d since been welcomed into the team and can usually be found at tight-head prop.
There’s a big difference between playing for the ACT and SIRU, with the Canberra team having a coach for forwards, backs, fitness and more.
“We learned the skills in the first week, now it’s about honing the skills each week,” he said.
In between his representative football commitments, Lachie’s working through year 9 at Sacred Heart Central School, he’s also a representative swimmer and hopes to play a few few games with the Cootamundra Bears this year.
For Lachie – it’s all about ensuring he can do his best for the Bears when he has the chance.
“Balancing the rugby, study, league training and swimming is a challenge,” he said.
“I still study and work hard to get the best marks I can.”
While he’s still only in juniors at 14-years-old, Lachie is aiming high and would like the chance to play for Australia.
“That’s everybody’s dream to play for their country, it would be pretty amazing,” he said.
However, there’s no doubt about the work he’ll have to do to reach that level.
On Saturday, he’ll play in the Group Nine selection trials to help the team perform well.
Meanwhile on Sunday, he’ll dive into the swimming pool at the Australian Institute of Sport for the Brophy inter-district swimming tournament. By the afternoon, he’ll strap his footy boots on for the ACT team.
