The Tricolours were leading at half-time but two late tries from the Harden Red Devils got them back into the game.
However, in injury time the Tricolours put 12 phases together and Bob Scott was able to bust over the line to score right on the final whistle.
Tricolours captain Corey Nicholson said it was a great game to win.
“We were leading 19-12 at half-time and they came back with two tries in the last 10 minutes,” he said.
Nicholson said it left the Cootamundra team behind with two minutes left on the clock.
“We scored a try on the bell to win,” he said.
The captain was worried those two tries had ended what had been a good day for Cootamundra, but the Tricolours rallied.
“We put together some great running rugby rugby and after 12 phases our half-back Bob Scott dummied them and got across the line,” Nicholson said.
While Scott scored the final try, Nicholson said it was a team effort.
Nicholson said Scott, Mikaera Smylie, Luke Eberle, Matt Berkrey and Pita Herangi were among the team’s best which took a while to work out.
“It was hard to pick players who stood out because the entire team dug deep and delivered,” he said.
“There wasn’t a bad player on the field.”
While the Tricolours have beaten the competition leaders, Nicholson said the team’s goal was to win more matches.
“We’ve had a slow start with plenty of fresh players,” he said.
“We’re out to enjoy our football and rebuild our side. So our goal is to keep being competitive and winning games.”
Meanwhile, as well as the game against Harden – the Tricolours organised a fundraiser to support Ben Smith’s family following a fatal accident his Wombat farm.
Club president Jeff White said it was well supported by Cootamundra and Harden players and spectators, however the amount raised for the Smith family was still being counted.
