Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional Council is to re-equip public toilets with easier-to-use paper dispensers.

Lorna Nixon spoke at the council's open forum to raise what "might seem a trivial topic, but is actually an important one" - the unsatisfactory nature of the dispensers in the public toilets.

"I live out of town so whenever I come to town I use the public toilets, and I've noticed problems with the dispensers," Ms Nixon told council.

"The first is safety - they're little rectangular dispensers with individual sheets of paper but if they run out you've got to get your fingers in the side or underneath and push them down and that's difficult for older people with arthritic hands," she said.

"I know about this because I've worked in aged care for 25 years.

"And the other issue is it's a deterrent to tourism - if a busload of people pulled up at one of our public toilets and it had one of those dispensers I don't think they'd stop a second time."

Ms Nixon said she had taken photos of some dispensers that had been tried and tested, like those in the Olympic Hotel, and had brand names of these and would be happy to have some input

"I know there are some dispensers that don't work, like those with the big round rolls that are so heavy you can't pull the paper off, and I just wonder how many of you have actually used the public toilets in Cootamundra?"

Mayor Abb McAlister said he appreciated what Ms Nixon was saying and agreed council had to make it easy and comfortable to use the toilets, asking her to leave the photos.

"It's something I wouldn't think would be a major dollar item to fix, so we'll arrange for someone to have a look at it."

Council's manager of waste, parks and recreation, Wayne Bennett, said council had "already taken this matter on board" and had units on order.

Ms Nixon asked what brand they had chosen, to which Mr Bennett replied he wasn't sure, but council had taken into consideration the issues Ms Nixon had raised.

Ms Nixon replied "I'd hate you to waste money on ones that don't work."
