Inspector Frank Brown OIC Cootamundra said the camera, with two lenses in a red and black bag, was left on the front seat of an unlocked car in a lane at the back of a residence in Parker Street.
"Strangely enough the camera walked," he said.
"We'd like to issue a friendly reminder about people locking their cars and moving any valuable items out of sight."
In another theft in town, CCTV cameras at the IGA supermarket showed an elderly man removing items from the medication isle.
The man, not known locally, stuffed the items down his pants and left without paying.
He was described as white caucasian, with white/grey hair, wearing a red jumper and beige slacks.
Police are also investigating a suspected theft this week of a herd of cattle from a property at Brungle, south west of Gundagai.
