Fast forward 14 years and Cowled and Miller now have a bond that will tie them together forever, recipients of the 2019 Les Boyd Medals.
Cowled, who began the season with Young but returned to his home club after the first four rounds, claimed the prestigious first grade medal, while Miller, who was lured out of a five-year retirement held on for a one-point win in reserve grade.
Arguably the best of the Bulldogs top grade players over the back end of the season, Cowled polled points in every game he played to finish on 85, 18 points clear of Jordyn Ballard, while Luke Levett, Wayne Parker and Roman Leota were also rewarded for excellent season's by polling well.
Miller made his comeback in the first round against Junee and was a standout, collecting the maximum 15 votes on offer for the day, but had to call on every point he gathered to hold out last year's winner Grant Boyd.
Co coach David Buttriss finished third, with Mitch Kemp, Brad Walsh and Aaron Byrne also among the votes.
While the season is now over for the Bulldogs first grade side, the reserve grade team goes around again this weekend in an Elimination semi.
