Twelve Cootamundra people, only a few of whom had tried painting before, had their work auctioned.

The Can Assist event included a raffle, cake auction and vigorous bidding for twelve paintings by well-known Cootamundra identities who were "put on the spot" to produce an artwork, even though some of them had never put brush to canvas before.

A cake that auctioned for $270 on Saturday night was just one of the over-the-top "bargains" that helped make the an outstanding success.

Around 115 people bought entry tickets, bringing their own food, many having organised a table.

They responded generously to the auctioneering skills of Col Harris, with the evening's top bid being an amazing $1200 for a painting by Rachel Cosgrove. Paintings by MP Steph Cooke and agent Peter McPhail were also auctioned, in addition to those in the photo.

Mr Harris introduced artists before each sale, handing over the mike for them to talk entertainingly about their creations.

The evening was the brainchild of jeweller Christine Williams, who modelled it on something similar ten years ago.

"The paintings were fantastic for people who were supposed to be non-artists," she said. "It was incredibly brave of them to step out of their comfort zone - I'm not sure if I'd do it myself!"

Gloria Harris said Can Assist was grateful for the ongoing support of the Ex-Services Club, with manager Greg Bruce making the winning bid of $150 for a big jar of rocky road to share among club staff.

"The club regularly supports Can Assist among the many others it helps, with proceeds from bingo, morning teas and provision of a venue for our meetings," she said.
