Bright and early yesterday morning council parks and gardens staff were hard at work putting in six new crepe myrtles in the Woolworths car park in Parker Street.
A semi-dwarf species, the trees are expected to grow to 1.8 metres high, and about the same distance wide, and will have fuchsia-pink flowers next summer.
They replace a dozen or more smaller hawthorn hedge plants which went in only a few months ago, but turned up their toes in this summer's heat.
Not so the drawf grevilleas fronting the footpath, which seem to have thrived in the heat and smokey air.
Cootamundra's crepe myrtles have also thrived this year, putting on a splendid display on cue in mid-to-late summer.
The garden and pergola dividing the carpark from Parker Street underwent a major change last year when the wisteria vine was removed, after the vine went feral and actually deformed its steel framework.
Woolworths car park area looks set to undergo another major change soon, with a suggestion before council last night for the Parker Street Laneway to be made one-way.
The council's traffic committee has asked for a report on the traffic movements along the laneway between Bourke and Wallendoon Streets and into/out of the Woolworths carpark.
The report should also look at the positioning of the current pedestrian crossings.
The suggestion was for the full length of the laneway from Adams to Bourke to Wallendoon to be one way.
