It was a new-look Book Week in Cootamundra this year. Covid restrictions meant the traditional parade down Parker Street with students from multiple local schools, pre-schools and community groups could not proceed.
However, students did not miss out with individual schools and pre-schools hosting parades in their school grounds. Although parents were unable to attend, they pulled out all the stops creating wonderful costumes with their children to represent their favourite book characters.
Book Week is an initiative of the Children's Book Council of Australia and has existed since 1945. There has never been a year like 2020 so to see the Book Parades, all be it a pared down version, continue, made the day of local youngsters.
The theme for this year's Book Week was 'Curious Creatures, Wild Minds'.
For Cootamundra brothers, Xander (8) and Benny (7) Moon, the parade is always loads of fun.
They have been participating in Book Parade activities since they were toddlers marching with the Cootamundra Library's StoryTime and Baby Bounce groups.
This year, the boys dressed as the twin doctors Dr Xand and Dr Chris from the 'Operation Ouch' books to join their Cootamundra Public School peers.
